I’m walking over to the garage
to get spuds in for the dinner
and on my way
I take the scenic route
past the lavender hedge
that Paul planted
and that curves along our path,
a low, beautiful border of purple.
I’m leaving jars in the garage
for recycling
and on my way
and I take the scenic route,
watching busy, buzzy bees
clamber, rise and fall
as I dander past
our lavender hedge.
I’m bringing in the washing
and on my way
I take the scenic route
watching lavender strands
of silver and purple
waving gently
in the breeze.
I’m walking over to tell Paul
that his tea’s ready
and on my way
I take the scenic route
my legs brushing against
our lavender hedge,
releasing its gentle fragrance
into the summer air.
Thank you, Lord
for the gift of lavender
to delight the senses
(and the bees!)
and for the precious gift
of simply having time
to savour this wonderful, purple hedge
when I take the “scenic route”
on so many occasions
as I dander through
our garden!
