Superman

It’s a Sunday morning
and I feel anxious
as I walk into the kitchen
even though
I have just spent some time
in prayer.

I turn on the radio
and am just in time to hear,
“Superman ain’t got nothin’ on me.”
The singer, Charlie Puth,
goes on to further reassure
as he continues, singing,
“I’m only one call away.”

I shake my head
in disbelief
and smile.
This is God at work
reaching out
to reassure me
right where I am –
in our kitchen
listening to the radio.

A gentle nudge,
a friendly reminder
that My God is always
by my side,
ready to walk with me
on each day’s journey
if I only ask.

My anxiety subsides
and I go on
to thoroughly enjoy the day.
By bedtime
although my circumstances
remain unchanged
I feel very reassured.

Yes, I know
that My God isn’t Superman
but I have to say –
isn’t He amazing?

Kettle

The alarm rings
at 6.30 am
on an autumn morning.
In an instant
concerns about family
flood my mind.

As I go downstairs
I already feel weighed-down
by worry.
The kitchen is in darkness
and I raise the blind.

There I see
a beautiful morning sky
stretching out before me
right across the heavens.

A gentle reminder
that my almighty and caring God
is already at work
at this early hour
and is, even now,
supporting me.

I smile
and put on the kettle.
